Georgraphy Curriculum Overview

Subject Lead: K Falkner

Intent

Love where you live, inspire your travels and appreciate our planet.

Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We aim to provide children with an understanding of the continually changing world in which they live and to explain how and why places are changing and predict future changes, both locally and globally. Furthermore, it will develop their critical thinking skills by giving children the opportunity to examine and analyse geographical resources, ask questions, make links and formulate hypotheses.

Through geography children will continue to develop their reading, writing and numeracy skills, for example: writing explanations, researching and making notes, reading data tables, and interpreting and creating graphs.

Implementation

Embsay’s Geography curriculum begins with the foundations in the EYFS to develop an interest of places across the world and how they differ from where we live. We go on to build Geography knowledge as well as skills throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. We initially start with local knowledge and build outwards to the wider world. We incorporate lots of fieldwork to take advantage of the lovely place where we live!

Topics are planned to build on our knowledge and understanding and incorporate a broad range of countries, cultures and religions. We learn about different geographical features of the places we study to embed our knowledge across the topics. We learn about carefully selected locations across the world to build our understanding of human and physical geography.

Impact

The impact of the Embsay’s Geography curriculum will be:

  • Children will be increasingly aware of countries across the world and their geographical features
  • Children will build a range of geographical skills
  • Children will have a strong understanding of the different types of geographical features and how they effect our world.
  • Children will understand how our world is ever changing and what we can do to protect it.
  • Children will have a understanding of our local geography and how we can appreciate the amazing place where we live
  • Children will have an increased appreciation for the diversity of the world that we live in
