Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to Year 5! The children have had a great week and have all settled in well. Please see below the details of how we do homework in Year 5.

The children will write a note in their homework diary when the homework was issued and the date it is due in.

Day of Issue

Content/Form

Due Date

Wednesday

Spellings, grammar or reading task.

To be marked or assessed the following Wednesday.

Tuesday

Numeracy task – an on-line activity or a work sheet.

Following Tuesday.

Half Termly

Topic Project

Due date will be detailed for each individual project.

In addition to the above, we would like the children:

* to read on a daily basis for at least 15 minutes and record appropriate comments in their reading recordings. Once they have finished a book, they should write a 3 or 4 sentence synopsis in their reading record. We have an extensive KS2 library at school with some excellent new, and classic, titles and genres. We therefore encourage the children to make a choice from this selection and the adults in the class will provide guidance on what to choose. Reading books and records should be in school every day.

* to regularly practise their spellings, using strategies learnt in class.

 * to practise their times tables facts. In Year 5, times table cards will be issued at our discretion to those children who we feel would still benefit from this system.

There will be no set testing dates for either times tables or personal spellings. The children are asked to mark on a class list when they are ready to be tested on either their personal spellings or their times tables. Whilst we will remind and encourage them, the children will be expected to manage this independently.

Children should use a pencil for numeracy work and written homework either a black or blue pen.

Most of the Y5 homework tasks will be reviewed or marked as a class and worksheets will be retained in school and filed in personal folders.

Homework dairies, reading books and reading records should be brought into school each day,

Please feel free to contact me if you need any more information,

Yours faithfully,

Mr Hardman.
