Dear Parent / Guardian,
We have been offered the possibility of hosting two ‘Bikeability’ training courses for children in year 6 at the beginning of October, which will include children learning to ride, under supervision, on public roads see http://www.dft.gov.uk/bikeability/. The roads used will be risk assessed by your local Road Safety Officer to ensure they are suitable for this training. When riding on the road, children will be fully supervised and accompanied and high visibility jackets will be provided to be worn at all times. All the instructors are trained and qualified Bikeability Instructors who will be familiar with local traffic conditions.
For your child to take part, you will need to ensure that your child has:
A roadworthy bike. Everything must be in good working order. A child will not be allowed to take part if a bike is considered unsafe. If you are not sure, please take it to a local bike shop for a professional check. The attached checklist may be of use to you to show what we will be checking prior to the course starting.
By law the bicycle must have an audible warning, e.g. a bell.
An approved cycle helmet which conforms to the following standard:-
EN 1078. SNELL B. 95.
Helmets used for other sporting activities are not acceptable
The ability to ride a bike! The course is not intended as a basic training course. It is a starting point for life long development of good practice as a cyclist on the road. Children need to be able to cycle and balance properly especially when giving hand signals to take part. If your child cannot do so, it would be very helpful to them (and us) if you would give them some opportunities to practise their basic cycling and balance skills before the course starts.
There are currently two groups of 12 planned – if more than 24 children wish to participate, a third group will be arranged.
Please complete the online form before Wednesday 21st September if you wish your child to take part. There will be a further North Yorkshire consent form to complete the week before the course begins.
