Jubilee!

Literacy 

The texts we will study this half term have a royal theme. We will read two fiction texts, The Queen’s Knickers and Ssh, You’ll Wake the Royal Baby. In our non-fiction work, we will be writing letters to the royal family, designing our own invitations and writing diary extracts. We will also look at some of A.A Milne’s poetry.  

Spelling, punctuation and grammar work will be reinforced on a daily basis. This term, we will be looking at how to add suffixes onto root words, contractions and revision of the year 1 and year 2 common exception words. In our punctuation work, we will look correctly punctuating sentences with commas, possessive apostrophes, exclamation marks and question marks. Grammar this term will look at identifying verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs in sentences.   

Spelling tests will take throughout the term. 

Maths  

This term in maths, we will continue our work on 2D and 3D shape, looking at faces, vertices and lines of symmetry. We will carry out a unit of work on time, learning to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. We will learn to measure accurately in cm and m. Revision of all the four operations – multiplication, division, addition and subtraction will be taught throughout the term.  

Science 

Throughout the half term, we will find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. We will learn to identify, compare and test the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses. We will carry out an investigation to find the most suitable material to use for the Queen’s umbrella.  

History 

Rule Britannia .This half term, the children will learn about the live of Queen Elizabeth II in preparation for the platinum jubilee. We will learn about the life of the Queen and the many roles she has, what a jubilee is and in the last week of term, we will celebrate with a mini class street party, We will also look briefly at the life of Queen Victoria and compare the lives and achievements of the two monarchs.  

Geography 

Geography will be covered next half term 

Computing  

Digital Photography –In our computing topic this half term, we will learn how to take photographs on iPad, zoom in and out and crop images and recolour.  

Art & Design 

This term the children will develop their drawing and painting skills through a study of Royal Portraits. They will create their own self-portrait inspired by our Royal family and decorate using collage materials. 

Music 

Songs with a royal theme will be learnt and performed.  Changing Guards, Lavenders Blue, The National Anthem and The Soldiers in Parade. 

P.E. 

Tennis – Skipton Tennis Centre will be working with the children develop their tennis skills.   

Net/Wall Games- Kanga Sports will be working with the children learning to develop their ball skills to hit a target, to throw a ball accurately over a distance, to bounce and catch and to work as a team.   

PE will take place on a Monday and Thursday 

R.E. 

Who is a Muslim and what do they believe? In this unit, the children will learn about some simple ideas about Muslim beliefs about God, making links with some of the 99 Names of Allah .They will re-tell a story about the life of the Prophet Muhammad .They will also learn why objects are special to Muslims and identify some ways Muslims mark Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr and how this might make them feel.  

P.S.H.E. 

Me and My Future:  In this unit, the children will learn about the value of money, the importance of saving and being responsible with money. They will learn about debit and credit.
