Literacy 

Writing: We will read Beowulf by Chris Ridell  

For our fiction and grammar work, we will be looking at a range of “Defeating a monster” narratives, including Beowulf. We will study these closely and then use them to plan and create our own “defeating the monster” short story 

Non-fiction We will be writing a fantasy report on Pandora’s hexapods. Looking in particular at identifying the audience and purpose of different forms of writing.  

Grammar: This term we will be using adverbials, prepositions and expanded noun phrases. Different sentence types – relative clauses and subordination.  

Spellings: Over this half term, we will continue with the Year 5 statutory words. The sixth list will be issued during week one and the seventh list will be issued half- way through the term. Year 5 spelling patterns will be taught through a weekly discrete lesson and regularly applied during our morning work and our literacy and topic lessons. Children can access Spelling Frame at any time during the term and practise the Y5/6 rules which they have been learning in class. They can also access any previous year group rules should they wish to revise their spellings.  

Maths 

We will continue our work on decimals including: 

  • Decimals as fractions 
  • Rounding decimals 
  • Percentages 
  • Percentages as decimals and fractions 
  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals 

We will then move on to geometry and properties of shape which will continue into the next half term. 

Science 

Life Cycles: This half term we will be describing the differences in the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds and describing the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals. 

Geography 

Locate and name the major counties and cities of the UK: We will also look at the identifying human and physical geography of these places and their topographical features including hills, mountains rivers etc and how they have changed over time. 

Computing

Art 

DT – Researching different styles of bridges the children will then design and make a prototype bridge of their own which they will evaluate. 

PE 

We will look at rugby skills with a particular focus on teamwork, technique, ball skills and communication. 

RE 

What does it mean if God is holy and loving? We will be exploring what Christians expect God to be like and using the theological terms ‘holy ‘loving’ ‘eternal’ ‘omnipotent’ and ‘omniscient’ 

Music 

In music this half term, the children will continue to learn either the trumpet or trombone; this is taught by a peripatetic teacher from North Yorkshire’s Wider Opportunities. 

French 

Les Animals: The children will continue to learn how to talk and write about their pets and favourite animals.  

PSHE 

Circle times and discussions 

Me and my relationships: We will learn about simple and safe routines to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses and the importance of immunisation. We will learn about the ways in which children grow and develop during puberty, both physically and emotionally. As well as discussing what makes a relationship healthy and positive, both on and offline.
