On Wednesday, we spent a lovely day at Bolton Abbey. The rain held off and we spent the morning identifying trees. We looked at the Horse Chestnut - with it's flower 'candles', the oak trees, the copper beach trees with a beautiful dark red leaf and ash trees which have 'keys' or bunches of seeds so they are easy to spot. We also saw some sycamore trees and the children pointed out this is the same species as the one we are watching all year in our school grounds.
We measured the age of trees (very roughly) using two hands to count ten years. The other way we measured was with our arm span which is roughly 100 years. So if we couldn't hug the whole trunk, it was older than 100 years!
We played some wide games in the field after lunch and did some of the Wellie walk (it was a bit slippery unfortunately!) before returning to school.
What a lovely day. The children did some amazing learning and had exemplary behaviour. Well done Year 1 :)
