Topic - World War II 

English 

The class will reflect on their reading habits, and reading preferences, to write book reviews and to plan future personal reading targets. They will be working on reading stamina and will use the VIPERS question stems to extend their comprehension skills. Through the class novel, Friend or Foe, they will be studying characterisation, and different perspectives before writing their own first person fiction and a news article based on real events . The children will perform poetry and write poems about the Blitz using descriptive and figurative language. Grammar, punctuation and spelling activities will continue on a daily basis.   

Maths 

Place Value – working with numbers to 6 digits. 

  • Reading, writing, describing and comparing numbers using mathematical vocabulary. 

  • Counting forwards and backwards in powers of ten. 

  • Rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000. 

  • Negative numbers and counting through zero. 

  • Applying the above knowledge to solve problems. 

Addition and Subtraction. 

  • Consolidate and then extending the use of written methods for addition and subtraction 

  • Improving the speed and efficiency of mental maths skills. 

  • Reasoning and problem solving. 

Multiplication and Division 

The children will be expected to regularly practise and apply their division and multiplication facts from their times tables.  

Science 

Properties of Materials: This half term, the children will learn about the Properties of Materials. They will compare, group and investigate everyday materials based on their properties including solubility, transparency, magnetism, flexibility and conductivity (electrical and thermal). They will present their findings in a range of formats including branching databases, bar and line graphs. 

History 

World War II: The children will learn about the key events, dates and turning points of the second World War, including the Battle of Britain. They will be finding out about the Blitz, evacuations, rationing and the land army. Through all of this we will be focusing, where possible, on the local area. We will then look at rebuilding Britain after the war including the introduction of the NHS. 

Computing 

Crumble: The children will learn what crumble is and how to use the coding skills they learnt in year 4 to programme physical equipment such as lights, motors and servos. 

Art 

Looking at scenes from the Blitz, the children will create a city Blitz skyline. 

The children will be studying portraits by different war artists. They will then draw their own portraits, with the focus on the skill of drawing and using chalk pastels.  

Later in the term they will be studying paintings by the artist Lowry and looking at perspective in their drawings. They will create their own street scenes using watercolour paints. 

PE  

Hockey and Netball - The children will be improving and refining their passing, defending and footwork skills before moving on to playing a high 5 mini netball tournament. 

RE 

What Does it Mean To Be a Muslim in Britain Today? The children will refresh their knowledge of the Five Pillars of Islam. They will learn about the significance of the Holy Qur’an and the key function of the Mosque in the Muslim Community. They will describe the forms of guidance a Muslim uses and compare them to their own experiences.  

     PSHE 

Keeping Myself Safe: This topic will initially focus on the vital subject of e-safety. The children will learn about how they might now, and in the future, safely communicate online and reflect on the phrase ‘Think before you send’. They will also learn about privacy and the sharing of personal information as well as keeping and using secure passwords. Finally, the children will learn about the effects and risks from commonly available substances (alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes, medicines). 

French 

Moi: We will begin by refreshing our knowledge of numbers and the alphabet, before moving on to learn how to greet others and how to ask and answer questions about ourselves.
