Superheroes and Me!

Literacy

In literacy this half term we will be learning about narrative through reading a range of stories. The stories we will be focusing on are Supertato and Super Daisy. We will concentrate on the sequencing of stories and the importance of the characters. We will also spend time enjoying poetry, looking at the structure of simple poems and following a pattern to create our own verses.

Phonics: Phonics will be taught daily.

Spellings: Spellings will be sent home each week and assessed on Fridays. These will be sent home in spelling books and you should encourage your child to learn them by looking at and saying the words then the sounds and  covering and writing them on the page.  When we send out the new words, we will record the score at the bottom of their book and any they got wrong, so that you can practise those again the following week.

Reading: Each week your child will receive three books.  We ask that you read these more than once with your child.  This helps them to develop fluency.  We also ask that you talk about the stories - What the characters are doing? What is happening in the story? etc and relate the text to their life.

The books they will get are as follows: -

1 Rhino reader – this is our main scheme and is brand new.  All books are matched to the children’s phonic level.  We are gradually building up the number of books we have in this scheme as new ones are being published.

2.  Big Cat – these books are also matched to their phonics level.

3.  Free Reader book - These books are not matched to the phonics level and they are for you to read together – you could read to your child and then have them repeat parts or pick out words that they are familiar with.

Maths

This term’s focus is number and place value as well as addition and subtraction. We will start by sorting and counting objects before starting to compare objects using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols. We will start working with numbers to 20 and then move onto numbers within 50.  We will read and write numbers in digits and words. Mental maths activities will be incorporated into lessons daily as well as into the provision areas in the classroom.

Science

Ourselves: This half term we will be learning about Ourselves as Humans and that we have many similarities and some differences. We will learn about the senses and how they help us to keep safe and make sense of the world around us. We will be able to say which part of the body is associated with each sense.

Seasonal changes: Throughout the year the children will observe changes across the four seasons and look at observing and describing weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies through the year.

History

Real Life Superheroes: In History we will be learning about real life superheroes.  This will focus on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We will order and sequence the life events of these two women as well as looking at how hospitals have changed over time.

Computing

In Computing we will be focusing on basic computer skills.  We will be learning to log on to the system and use a simple paint programme to produce digital content.

Art & Design

The children will develop an understanding of simple mechanisms through designing and making a moving picture based on their topic of ‘Superheroes’. They will then evaluate their finished product.

PE

PE in Year 1 will take place on Monday and Thursday.  Children should come in PE kits on those days.

Hockey: We start by learning how to hold a hockey stick safely, then developing our basic ball rolling and passing skills .  We use the skills used to take part in team games. We will build our understanding of the importance of rules during team games.

Netball: The children will also learn how to throw and catch a large ball and play games related to netball skills.

RE

God: We will consider how Christians perceive God and how the Christian values are portrayed through parables.

PSHE

In circle time we will discuss ways we can stay safe and follow rules. Through stories and role play we will also learn how our behaviour affects other people and how to work and play co-operatively. We will also be discussing how to keep healthy.

Music

In music, we will be learning about pulse.

Homework

Each Friday,  the children in Year 1 will receive two pieces of homework.  This will be a literacy-based activity and a numeracy-based activity.  These will be sent home on a Friday.  Please take the time to sit and support your child whilst they do their work.  Each task should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.  Homework books should be sent into school on or before Thursday each week so that we can mark and update the books.  Thank you
