Toys

Literacy

We will start the term by looking at recipes and writing our own recipes for pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. We will then look at the book ‘Can we really help the polar bears?’ as part of Fairtrade Fortnight. We will write letters and think of the things we can do in our classroom to help the environment. We will then look at books and poems around our theme of toys and use these to inspire writing newspaper articles, descriptions and short narratives. We will discuss the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.

  • We will continue our focus on sentence writing, thinking carefully about our spelling choices as well as starting to use question marks and exclamation marks in our writing.
  • Spellings will be assessed on Fridays.
  • Reading: Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Fridays. We encourage books to be re-read to support the children’s fluency and their comprehension skills. Please continue to send in their reading folder every day.

Phonics will be taught on a daily basis.

Maths

In maths we will be continuing to develop our place value knowledge and practise counting, reading and writing numbers to 50. We will be counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will then move on to look at length and height. We will begin to record lengths and heights, and use these to compare, describe and solve practical problems. We will then look at weight and volume.

Science

Electricity: In science we will be learning about what electricity is and the difference between mains and battery electricity. We will look at where electricity comes from and how to keep ourselves safe around electricity. We will finish our topic by making and drawing simple circuits.

Topic

Toys: In topic we will learn about the history of toys. The children will look and learn about toys from the past and sort them onto a timeline. They will consider how toys have changed over time and why they have changed. They will then research their favourite toy and learn that toys come from all over the world. At the end of our topic, they will design and create a futuristic toy using their knowledge.

Computing

In computing this half term, we will learn about coding. We will practise giving instructions to make objects on the screen move.

Art and Design

The children will create observational drawings of old toys using a range of media including pencils, crayons and chalk pastels with the focus on different textures.

P.E.

We will be participating in activities which will develop our basic skills for games.  We will be learning to hit objects with a bat, retrieve a rolling ball and throw and catch a variety of balls.

R.E.

Easter: We will explore and reflect on why Easter matters to Christians under the theme of Salvation. We will look at new life in relation to Spring, and learn about the Easter story, remembering Jesus and looking at Easter celebrations today.

P.S.H.E

Through circle time games, role play, and discussion, we will be discussing our futures and thinking about different jobs we could do when we are older.
