The Anglo Saxons 

Literacy 

Writing: We will read Beowulf by Chris Ridell   

For our fiction and grammar work, we will be looking at a range of “Defeating a monster” narratives, including Beowulf. We will study these closely and then use them to plan and create our own “defeating the monster” short story  

Grammar: This term we will be using adverbials, prepositions and expanded noun phrases. Different sentence types – relative clauses and subordination.   

  

Spellings: Over this half term, we will continue with the Year 5 statutory words. The fifth list will be issued during week one and the sixth list will be issued half- way through the term. Year 5 spelling patterns will be taught through a weekly discrete lesson and regularly applied during our morning work and our literacy and topic lessons. Children can access Spelling Frame at any time during the term and practise the Y5/6 rules which they have been learning in class. They can also access any previous year group rules should they wish to revise their spellings.  

Maths 

We will continue our work on decimals including:  

  • Decimals as fractions  
  • Rounding decimals  
  • Percentages  
  • Percentages as decimals and fractions  
  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals  

We will then move on to geometry and properties of shape which will continue into the next half term.  

Science 

Forces: The children will learn about different forces such as gravity, friction and water and air resistance including how these can balance and oppose each other.  They will understand how mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. 

Geography 

Locate and name the major counties and cities of the UK: We will also look at the identifying human and physical geography of these places and their topographical features including hills, mountains rivers etc and how they have changed over time.  

Computing 

In Computing we will be looking into sharing information which includes Identifying and exploring how information is shared between digital systems. 

Art 

The children will look at Anglo Saxon artwork and designs and then use this knowledge to design and then create their own Anglo Saxon-style broaches. 

PE 

Kanga will be teaching Outdoor Adventurous Activities this half term. The children will learn outdoor skills such as orienteering and develop their teamwork and problem solving skills. 

RE 

Salvation: We will be reviewing and discussing the details within the Easter story, focusing in on what Jesus did to save mankind. 

Music 

In music this half term, the children will continue to learn either the trumpet or trombone; this is taught by a peripatetic teacher from North Yorkshire’s Wider Opportunities. 

French 

Le petit déjeuner. The children will develop their awareness of typical breakfast food and drink in France, learn to order a range of food and drink, learn to express and understand likes and dislikes with regard to food/drink and learn to express and understand opinions. 

PSHE 

Circle times and discussions 

Me and my future: We will learn about the life skills the children will need as adults. Such as managing money, making a good impression, learning about careers and knowing the difference between essentials and desires.
