Up, Up and Away  

Literacy 

Fiction: This term, we will learn about stories with a message by reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. Through this text, children will learn about character development, speech, varying sentence structure and language. 

Non Fiction: We will learn how explanation texts are organised and devise our own pages for an information book about flight. On a daily basis phonics, spelling, handwriting and punctuation work will be reinforced. In our grammar work we will learn how to use question marks and commas in a list. The children will also be introduced to possessive apostrophes and contractions.  Spelling tests will take place on a Friday. Please keep revising the year 2 common exception words. 

Maths  

In our final half term, we will revise the operations of addition and subtraction in a problem solving context, 

 We will cover work on measurement and learn how to choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels. Our final unit will cover position and direction where children will use vocabulary to describe the movements of objects and shapes from different starting position.  

Science 

Plants: We will carry out experiments to show the conditions plants need to grow, finding out and describing how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy. We will observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. Through the topic, we will learn that plants provide food for humans.   

History 

The Wright Brothers – This term, our history topic will focus on the first flight.  During the topic we will seek to find answers to the following questions.  

What do you think the Wright Brothers did to make them famous?  

How did the Wright brothers manage to be the first to launch a man powered flight?  

Why did the Wright brothers succeed where others had failed?  

How do we possibly know about their first successful flight, when it happened over 100 years ago now?  

How did flight change as a result of the Wright brothers’ work?  

Computing 

Digital Photography cont.  - In our computing topic this half term, we will learn how to take photographs on iPad, zoom in and out and crop images and recolour. 

Art & Design 

The children will be looking at drawing insects in flight to develop their drawing and ink techniques. Using oil pastels and paints they will study bees and their hives as well as creating a 3D model using mixed media. 

Music 

In music this half term we will sing songs about flight, such as ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’.  

P.E. 

Athletics - Children will learn to run with agility and confidence, learn the best jumping techniques for distance, throw different objects in a variety of ways, hurdle an obstacle and maintain effective running style and complete an obstacle course with control and agility 

R.E. 

What can we learn from sacred books In this unit, we will learn that sacred texts contain stories which are special to many people and should be treated with respect. We will re-tell stories from the Christian Bible and stories from the Qur’an and Sefer Torah and ask and suggest answers to questions arising from the stories Jesus.  

P.S.H.E. 

Moving on. In PSHE we will look at the feelings and emotions encountered when moving from one class to another. We will look at the transition from Year 2 to Year 3, visit the classroom, talk with the year 3s and discuss concerns, worries and things that the children are looking forward to.
