Wild World

Literacy

Writing: We will read The lost book of adventure

For our non-fiction and grammar work, we will be looking at a range of non-chronological reports on the subject of survival in different environments. We will study these closely and then use them to plan and create our own non-chronological report. We will also be writing an instructional text after studying a number of examples and exploring what makes a good instructional text.

Grammar: Our focus will be different sentence types, prepositions and modal verbs as well as a focus on checking and proof reading our work.

Spellings: Over this half term, we will be re-visiting the year 5 statutory spellings which we have identified the class have struggled with over the year. Year 5 spelling patterns will be taught through a weekly discrete lesson and regularly applied during our morning work and our literacy and topic lessons. Children can access Spelling Frame at any time during the term and practise the Y5/6 rules which they have been learning in class. They can also access any previous year group rules should they wish to revise their spellings.

Maths

We will be working on properties of shape and units of measurement including:

  • Angles
  • Position and direction
  • Converting units
  • Measuring volume
Science

Life Cycles: This half term we will be describing the differences in the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds and describing the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals. Including how humans grow and age and the changes that take place. We will also study important naturalists such as Sir David Attenborough and Jane Goodall.

Computing

Creating media: In computing we will be studying and creating video media and editing it. We will also re-visit online safety.

Art

The children will be developing their illustration techniques for their poems about nature and create drawings using pencil and watercolours inspired by the book ‘Lost Words’.

PE

In PE with kanga sports we will be working on athletics and rounders. The children will also be swimming on Tuesdays.

RE

Why do some people believe God exists? We will be looking at what different people believe about God.

Music

In music this half term, the children will continue to learn either the trumpet or trombone; this is taught by a peripatetic teacher from North Yorkshire’s Wider Opportunities.

French

At the beach: The children will look at the language of holidays and hobbies

PSHE

We will learn about the changes which happen to humans as they age, in particular the changes that happen to boys and girls during puberty. Unlike previous years this will be done as a whole class. This topic has strong links to- and will be taught alongside- our science topic.   Vocab: Puberty Menstruation Periods Routine Reaction Compromise Dares Challenge Boundaries Confidentially Confidential CV Cost of living
