The Mediterranean and the Ancient Greeks

English

Writing and Reading: Year 6 will continue working on their writing inspired by ‘The Alchemist’s Letter’, which we began in Summer 1. We will then continue to link English with our Ancient Greek topic; we will be reading ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan and ‘Who Let The Gods Out’ by Maz Evans, identifying and discussing themes and conventions using VIPERS.

We will also focus more in depth on Ancient Greek myths, including King Midas and Theseus and the Minotaur for example. The children will write an alternative ending to King Midas - ‘What happens two weeks later?’, then, using their knowledge of mythological creatures, the children will design their own creature and write a detailed non-chronological report about it.

The children will also complete an information/explanation (mixed text) focusing on the human circulatory system (Science link).

In all writing, the children will consider the audience, purpose and effect, making decisions about the appropriateness of grammar and punctuation.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS): Year 6 will continue to learn the statutory word list spellings and spelling errors from their own writing. In addition, we will focus on choosing the correct grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and tone to fit with the formality of their writing. Finally, we will research words with Greek origins and look at word etymology.

Drama/Speaking and Listening: The children will be rehearsing for their Shakespeare Festival performance of ‘The Tempest’ at South Craven School in July.

Maths

Our focus this term is to revisit/complete learning in the following areas:

  • Geometry: properties of shape, drawing shapes accurately and drawing nets of 3D shapes
  • Maths in Art based on spirals: spirals in nature, Archimedes and Fibonacci
  • Arithmetic practice and times tables revision

Science

Heart and Circulatory System /

Year 6 will complete the topic, ‘The human circulatory system’. Using their knowledge, the children will write a mixed-text report (combined information and explanation text). Science will link closely with our work on ‘Healthy Bodies’ in PSHE: the children will learn about the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies’ function.

History/

Geography

Ancient Greece

The children will learn about the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks and the impact of the Ancient Greek civilisation on the modern world: this includes democracy, science/maths, architecture, art and sport.

In Geography, the children will explore the position and significance of latitude and longitude, including identifying the tropics, meridian and time zones.

Computing

In Computing, we will be Creating Media through 3D Modelling. The children will develop their knowledge and understanding of using a computer to produce 3D models using an online app called ‘Tinkercad’, familiarising themselves with working in a 3D space, moving, resizing, and duplicating objects. They will then create hollow objects using placeholders and combine multiple objects to create a model of a desk tidy. Finally, they will examine the benefits of grouping, ungrouping and locking 3D objects, before planning, developing, and evaluating their own 3D model of a Greek Temple according to a given set of criteria (which they will then build as part of D and T).

Art/DT

In DT, the children will be designing and making Ancient Greek temples which can withstand weight, water and wind. They will build the structure using wood - carefully measuring, sawing and joining.

The children will also be looking at Mediterranean cookery and will make their own pizza as well as creating other Mediterranean recipes. We will be ensuring good hygiene and safety when preparing and cooking our dishes.

Finally, on 21st June, they will work with a visiting member of Keighley Creative, to design and create set artwork and costumes for our Shakespeare Festival performance of ‘The Tempest’.

Music

In music, the children will continue to learn either the trumpet or trombone; this is taught by a peripatetic teacher from North Yorkshire’s Wider Opportunities. This will culminate in an end of year recital for parents.

We will also be preparing songs for our Leavers’ Service in July.

P.E.

PE lessons this half term will be focussed on athletics, including running techniques, throwing safely with power and accuracy and effective distance jumping.

We also have an Athletics event at Sandylands (16th June) and Sports Day (6th July).

R.E.

In RE this term, our big question will be ‘How can God bring Freedom and Justice?’ The children will be making connections between the story of Moses and the concepts of freedom and salvation, using theological terms as well as exploring the ways in which some Christians put their beliefs into practice by trying to bring freedom to others.

PSHE

Preparing for Transition

RSE

Work in PSHE will have a big focus this term. This will be based around preparing for the transition to secondary school: coping with change, dealing with their hopes and anxieties, making friends and asking for help. The children will also be reviewing their time at Embsay and discussing all their strengths and achievements.

The children will also continue their work on ‘Healthy Bodies’, and will take part in Relationship, Health and Sex Education as part of their PSHE lessons this term (during the week beginning 19th June).

Vocabulary: change, transition, reproduction, diversity, responsibility, sexuality, -phobia, puberty, boundaries, conflicting emotions, adolescence

French

The children will revise vocabulary learned across the years in preparation for moving on to secondary school.
